Changes in Oil Production Technology

There has been evolution in oil production technology today compared to how it was in the past as you will learn more here. Since oil is an essential commodity for the survival of man, a look into the changes in technology in production is a good idea. The ancient people in Mesopotamia used a hardened substance called bitumen to construct sailing vessels and put jewelry pieces together. In Egypt, it was used to solidify the famous pyramids. These minerals which oozed to the surface freely requiring no extraction equipment led to the discovery of oil.

The first method used to extract oil was by digging up the soil to reach the oil. The people living in this period used oil to heal diseases, light their lamps and heat their houses. There was not much knowledge of oil and the people came up with myths about the earth releasing gases and liquids.

The next discovery to be made as you will find here, was the spring pole. The device as you discover more here, was attached to a tree which provided the required resistance to reach greater depth, was used by the Ruffner brothers to enhance salt extraction. The importance of oil was still not known to people at this time even though they knew it was a multipurpose commodity. However when steam power was introduced, the brothers were able to drill salt at a faster rate. A Yale chemist Benjamin Silliman discovered more about how oil could be converted into kerosene that is used for lighting lamps. After the discovery by Benjamin, there was more interest in this product and commercial extraction could be seen as you’ll see here.

As you will find out in this website, the demand for oil was to rise in the near future. The number of oil deposits discovered in the earth increased. However there were hard sediments that made drilling difficult hence the need for improved equipment. As a result, a technique called rotary drilling was developed whose head penetrated the hard rock without the need to remove debris regularly. One event that marked how effectiveness of the rotary drill in the process of oil extraction was observed in Texas when a rig struck a rock resulting into a lot of oil flowing to the surface. With the world war 1 coming around, the demand for oil rose, leading to increased competition which resulted in greater development of oil tools. The most successful development for the rotary drill was the ability to dig deeper.

At the moment as we learn more here, rotary rigs are still in use for extracting oil. However, they are advanced technologically as they are fitted with digital tracking devices, touchpads and video control to monitor and access the rigs from a fur. Besides that, the rigs are more sophisticated. An instance, is the ability of a rig to move on its own as well to extract oil from a number of fields.
